The pink flamingo lawn sculptures created by Don Featherstone, once helped to distinguish one middle-class cookie-cutter home from another. Today, as the middle class collapses, the pink flamingo is often used when referencing decor around lower-class dwellings. The peacock, which roosts in high areas, is commonly used as a symbol of royalty. Our elected leaders from high-status backgrounds often rise to power upon promises to represent the middle class, but once elected will they notice those who support them from below?
